Using non-Roman scripts
Vocab now has support for non-Roman scripts.
Fonts
To use a non-Roman script you must have a font for that script. These are
included in localized versions of the MacOS or you can download them
seperately.
Russian
Cyrillic fonts for languages such as Russian are available from Apple. These
include Cyrillic versions of fonts like Courier and Geneva. You can download
the Apple Russian Standard Fonts at this address:
http://download.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/Russian/Macintosh/System/System_7.0.1/RS-System_7.0.1-3of7.sea.bin
For more fonts, keyboard layouts, and other information on setting up cyrillic
text on your Mac, try visiting Russification of Macintosh at http://www.friends-partners.org/partners/rusmac/
Configuring Vocab
Once you have your non-Roman fonts installed, you have to configure Vocab to
use them.
Click on the Edit menu and choose Preferences, then click on the Fonts tab.
This panel contains the preferences for the fonts Vocab will use.
You can use the "Preview current font in popup menu" option to see your fonts
in what-you-see-is-what-you-get form. This is especially useful for fonts who
describe themselves in their own script (like the Apple Russian fonts.)
Unfortunately, you will probably need a font that can display both normal
English and non-Roman text (with the option-key to enter non-Roman
characters) because the word list box is unable to display two different fonts at
once. We are hoping to correct this problem in a future release of Vocab.
After you've configured your fonts, click OK and you're ready to use Vocab.
If you have any tips, experiences, or information regarding non-Roman script and Vocab, then please don't hesitate to email it to us at cab@kagi.com.
